Second time we have come here. We had the best day both times we have come. Today we were lucky enough the man with the wooden toys was there and my children absolutely loved playing with them. The train experience is always lovely, my son is obsessed with trains. The man who runs the shop is the warmest most welcoming man. The trail was a lot of fun, the children really enjoyed it. So nice to have such a wonderful time and at a price that you can come back again and it not be something you can only do once a year.

πŸ† Family Action Verdict

Strongest fit for families with train-obsessed children, especially younger ones who'd be overwhelmed at larger heritage railways. The small scale means manageable crowds, unhurried pace, and genuine volunteer interaction. Steam event days add extra magic β€” children have been allowed to steer engines under supervision.

ℹ️ What to Know Before You Go

πŸ’‘Check the schedule before visiting β€” steam days run on the first Sunday of each month, diesel on Wednesdays and school holidays
⏰The tearoom is open independently of the railway β€” worth visiting even when trains aren't running
🎟️Allow a few hours to cover the train ride, museum, trail, and any hands-on demonstrations
πŸš—Look out for the wooden toy demonstrator at events β€” reviewers single him out as a highlight for younger children

β€œGreat little place for steam train enthusiasts! Family run and a rare authentic experience rather than the usual commercial feel. It’s a small place, but plenty to keep you entertained for a few hours, plus a coffee shop. We visited when they had an event on. A lovely lady let my sons steer her little engine and we paid for my eldest son to climb to the top of a ladder on an American fire engine (105 ft!). Wholesome day run by friendly enthusiastic people.”

β€œAs previously stated, a hidden gem. Santa was fantastic, the personal knowledge of the children blew their minds! And the surprise gifts were great too. The volunteers were so friendly and approachable. We loved the juggling elf. The activities, again, a massive hit. It was just a lovely wholesome day. No queueing with hundreds of people swarming around you. Nice, calm, thoroughly thought out. Will be back for future events!”

β€œThe stuff are friendly, pleasant, professional and always give an excellent service. Nothing is ever too much trouble for them! The food and cakes are delicious and so is the coffee!”
