📍 Chislehurst, Greater London
Guided lamp-lit tours through chalk caves used for mining, WWII shelter for up to 15,000 people, and mushroom growing. Tours run on the hour and last 45 minutes. Recommended for ages 8 and above.
I recently visited Chislehurst Caves and had a fantastic experience. The caves themselves are absolutely fascinating — full of history, atmosphere, and stories that really bring the place to life. Walking through the tunnels feels like stepping back in time. A big part of what made the visit so enjoyable was our tour guide, Alex. He was funny, engaging, and incredibly knowledgeable. He shared so much interesting information in a way that was easy to follow and genuinely entertaining. You could tell he was passionate about the history of the caves, and that enthusiasm made the whole tour even better. He struck the perfect balance between being informative and keeping things lighthearted, which made the experience memorable. I would highly recommend visiting. However, it was a shame that during the tour there were several young children crying and causing disruptions. Because the tour is so informative and detailed, it’s important to be able to clearly hear what’s being explained. At times, it was difficult to catch everything Alex was saying due to the noise. Personally, I think it would improve the experience for everyone if there were an age guideline — perhaps not allowing children under 10 — as the tour really requires attention and listening to fully appreciate it. Overall, it was a brilliant visit, made especially enjoyable by an excellent guide. I would definitely recommend it to anyone interested in history and a unique underground adventure.
🏆 Family Action Verdict
Best for families with children aged 10 and above who can focus and listen during a structured 45-minute guided tour. The guides are consistently praised as knowledgeable and entertaining — the quality of the guide makes the experience.

“Great guided tours. Entertaining, fun and friendly guides. Very interesting historical look at the area. Reasonably priced. Guided tours only, on the hour. You can't walk yourself around (you'd probably get lost in the dark). No photography allowed inside, so you'll need to settle for these two that I took of the beautiful autumn trees outside”
