1 / 2Freerein Riding Holidays
đ Hereford, Greater London
Guided and self-guided horse riding holidays across Mid Wales covering 2-6 day routes through mountain tracks, the Wye Valley, and the Black Mountains. Riders stay overnight at country inns. Minimum age 12, experienced riders only.
Freerein is the best!! I have done two trips with them, the 6-day self-guided Red Kite in 2022, and the 6-day guided Border to Coast in 2025, which I just finished a few days ago. Both trips were fantastic!! The Freerein horses are amazing -- sure-footed, brave, and athletic. I rode Duke in 2022 and Freya in 2025 and I adored them both. Freerein clearly takes great care of their herd and the horses love their jobs. Self-guided is a totally self-sufficient adventure; the Freerein staff are just a phone call away if you get lost, but the sense of accomplishment from navigating inn-to-inn is all your own. And the guided Border to Coast is a real cross-country trek full of varied landscapes, ending with many fun gallops along the beach! As long as you are fit enough for long days in the saddle in all kinds of weather, you will have the trip of a lifetime. Cannot recommend them enough!!
đ Family Action Verdict
Best for experienced riding families with teenagers or adults who can handle long days in the saddle across varied mountain terrain. The horses are consistently rated exceptional â sure-footed, forward-going, and well cared-for.

âAbsolutely incredible few days we spent on a self guided tour round the Black Mountains. Definitely one of the most memorable holidays we've had for a very long time. The horses are all gorgeous, forward going, happy and very well cared for, loved (and loving!) beasts. Not for the faint hearted, though! This is serious riding and if you're self guided, you will need to be pretty good at orienteering! If you don't want to do the latter, take one of their wonderful, friendly guides :) The countryside is glorious. Both the Roast Ox Inn and the Old Mill Guest House were amazing, and the food at the Felin Fach Griffin superb. We are already looking at dates for our next holiday with Free Rein. Thank you!!!â

âA fantastic way to (re)discover Wales through the ears of amazing, fit, happy, friendly and forward going horses! The guides are professional, friendly and know the routes and terrain perfectly. They make sure you are having a fun ride and great holidays whilst enjoying the beautiful Welsh scenery. I highly recommend Freerein and I go back every year for more wonderful holidays and memories!â

âMy sister and I recently did the Silver John Guided Tour and had such a spectacular time. We were super fortunate to have Alice as our guide and be paired up with Harry and Usher as our horses. Horses are super well cared for with appropriately fitted tack. Accommodations and food were wonderful. We hope to be back one day!â
