1 / 3London Transport Museum Depot
📍 London, Greater London
Working storage depot for London's historic transport fleet, open only a handful of days per year. Families explore vintage vehicles with knowledgeable volunteer guides. Free entry, cafe, and pram access included.
Only open a few days a year, this is well worth a visit if you have any interest in transport in London. It is not a museum as such, just a very large store, so many items are not labelled and many more are hidden away in boxes only to be viewed under supervision on short tours. There are also talks and other activites. Food and drink are available and a well-stocked shop which you will find hard to resist. Easily accessible from Acton Town station and most of the site is fully accessible. There were lots of volunteer staff around who were very helpful and friendly, including one man who started as a tram conductor in 1947; he is now over 100 but looks half that age! Although I guess there were 2-300 people there, it did not seem overcrowded, but probably try and avoid half-terms etc.
🏆 Family Action Verdict
Best for families with children who have a genuine enthusiasm for vehicles and transport history — the Depot rewards curiosity and questions. Volunteer guides are knowledgeable and engaging, turning what could be a passive walkthrough into an interactive session. Open only a few days per year, so check dates and book the moment they are announced.

“Honestly, a great day out. Very lucky to have visited on an open day to explore Tfl in more detail. The models and insight into the design of the new Piccadilly line trains were the highlight. Lots of activities for young kids and the shops (friend of museum, official shop and old signage and moquette) were all great. Highly recommend booking the next one when it's available.”

“The museum depicts the entire history of the London transport. You will get a chance to observe the timeline of the London transport, from the very 1st train and buses till the modern running fleet. They also run demonstrations on the London transport department history every hour, but that needs bookings in advance (same day, at least an hour before).”

“Amazing guided tour, with great detail. Got to see a lot of things but you could easily spend another 2 hours looking round. Will be coming back for an open day for sure! There were toilets and a gift shop here.”

Overview
The Depot holds London Transport's preserved collection — vintage buses, trains, trams, and signage — in a functioning storage facility rather than a curated museum. Volunteer guides lead tours and explain vehicles not on public display. Hourly demonstrations run throughout open days and must be booked same-day at least one hour before. A gift shop, cafe, and accessible facilities are available on open days.
