1 / 3Middleton Railway
π Leeds, North West
Genuine steam and diesel train rides on the world's oldest continuously working railway, plus an interactive Engine House museum where kids climb into locomotive cabs. Runs from Moor Road to Park Halt through woodland.
π 10/10 experience π We came to Leeds for a day trip last weekend. My boyfriend (who came a long way from Hong Kong for holidays) was so excited to see the old railway! At first, we thought it was just a museum to see exhibitions about railway. A nice old gentleman welcomed us, opened the door for us and asked if we would like to take a ride. It was so lucky because the railway ride only operated on weekends. We bought tickets for a return ride and it was super fun! We hopped on one of the carriages and there were βhappy birthdayβ signs. My boyfriend was surprised because it was two days before his birthday. We kindly sing birthday song and took a few pictures to celebrate the moment. β¨ It was such a great experience. The nice volunteers really made our day! βΊοΈ
π Family Action Verdict
Outstanding for train-mad children aged 3β12 and their adults. The combination of real steam rides, cab-access museum and onward woodland walk fills a full day. Volunteer-run atmosphere makes it feel like a discovery rather than a commercial day out. Pushchair ramps and accessible facilities throughout.

βA super little railway. Standard gauge ( full size) running steam and diesel locos. A short trip about 10 mins each way from Moor lane to Middleton park. On site there's a free museum with many small locos on display and lots of info. The ticket office has a small shop, second hand books and a cafe with toilets. Staff and volunteers are super friendly and happy to chat. All on one level with ramps available onto the train so suitable for all abilities. Dog friendly with supplies of treats and water. A great afternoon out for all the family, if driving there's a small free carpark at the station. Currently the cost is 8 pounds for an adult ride all day with options available. Best checking the website for running days and events. Well deserved 5 stars.β

βI can't believe I've lived in Leeds area for years and only just found this gem. I went with my 2 daughters (5 and 7) and they loved it. The train ride itself is just the right length of time. I got off at the destination to walk up to the kids play park. About a 15 min walk from the destination. Part of the coaches you travel in is open so you can have a really open air experience. The museum part of Middleton railway is brilliant too. You walk between 2 lines of old steam and diesel engines and get really close. Not 2m behind a rope like in so many other places. They have made it so you can actually go in the cab of one of the steam engines and blow a whistle. See all the leavers. There is a cafe and toilets too. Worth every penny I paid.β
