1 / 3Museum of Transport, Greater Manchester
π Cheetham Hill, North West
Free-entry museum in a 1930s bus garage housing historic buses, coaches, and trams from Greater Manchester's transport history. Children can board many vehicles, observe live restoration projects, and collect free fun packs.
Really friendly staff who have so much knowledge about what they have on show here at the museum, you can really tell that they have passion for what they are preserving π
π Family Action Verdict
Best for families with children who are drawn to vehicles, engineering, and hands-on exploration β the ability to board actual vintage buses rather than just view them is the key differentiator. Free entry for under-sixteens removes the cost barrier entirely.

βThe Museum of Transport is an absolute gem for anyone fascinated by the history of road travel, particularly buses. Stepping inside feels like a genuine trip back in time, largely thanks to the incredibly preserved collection of classic vehicles. βThe highlight of the museum is undoubtedly the sheer number of old school and public service buses, each telling a unique story of local and national commuting. You don't just admire these relics from a distanceβyou can often climb aboard and truly immerse yourself. Seeing the driverβs seat of a vintage bus, with its massive steering wheel and old-school levers as seen in the photo, is a powerful reminder of how hands-on driving used to be. The front of the old Leyland bus you captured, with its classic "Temporary Conductor" sign and clear route details, perfectly evokes the era of bus conductors and manually changed destination blinds.β
