Poplar Baths Leisure Centre and Gym
π London, Greater London
Leisure centre in Poplar with indoor swimming pools, gym, fitness classes, and badminton courts. Tower Hamlets residents access free women's swimming sessions. Families report management and billing problems alongside facility maintenance issues.
I visited for the first time today for the free Tower Hamlets womenβs swimming. I was hesitate over the previous reviews but I had a great experience. The pool was quiet (6ish), the showers hot, lockers available for a 20p coin (you donβt get it back) and very easy to go straight in and out. Lots of kids in the kids area which is great to see it being used.
π Family Action Verdict
Families wanting a quick swimming session during quieter hours will find the pool functional and the facilities adequate. Regular membership or class bookings carry more risk β recent reviews document billing errors and class cancellations with no advance warning.

βHave you ever perhaps read the terms and conditions for buying eg. A cinema ticket or a restaurant booking? Turns out youβre supposed to do this for, of all things, a badminton booking!! After paying ~24 quid for two booking slots, we were told we needed to pay Β£1.25 per person for everyone who wasnβt the booking holder and not a member. Oh yeah, because badminton is definitely a sport that people book a whole court for and play alone! When we tried to understand this, the staff basically flipped their monitor around and told us to read clause X of the terms - this is by no means a fault of the staff but seriously, either absorb the cost into the court booking itself so people can make informed choices, or have a real reflection on whatβs being charged and understand that this is a sport that a single person cannot feasibly play alone! Come on Tower Hamlets??? Anyway sports accessibility is deadβ

βAbsolutely discusting and dusty, mentioned to staff several times to clean there machines. They still don't clean it. Last 5 days itβs been like this. Today i came in to see if its been cleaned same very dusty and filthy. I even explained i suffer from asthma and cant be around build up of dust as that a trigger for me. I will be checking out mile end gym next and leaving this filth. Some staff at poplar gym are also very rude dont acknowledge when you say good morning. Clearly have no customer service skills. They also have lockers that Β£1 gets stuck in. When you ask them to give you your Β£1 back they nod there head and say what do you want them to do. I witnessed a lady experiencing this and intervene to help her as she had a language barrier. Yet the guy was rude to myself too.β

βThey owe me Β£752.25 in overcharged membership fees since cancelling my membership. They have been horrific with dealing with the request via email. Initially I had a Chiara respond denying they had responsibility for the payments. After 2 months I now have a Jodie who has admitted wrong doing and said they are willing to give me a years membership and badminton bookings - Laughable. They are now not responding to me and I have to go to small claims on OUR OWN COUNCIL. You would think that Tower Hamlets would be for the people. Clearly not. Thank you for wasting my time. I'l be seeing you.β
