1 / 3Ravenglass & Eskdale Steam Railway
π Ravenglass, North West
Fifteen-inch narrow gauge heritage railway running seven miles from Ravenglass to Dalegarth for Boot through the Western Lake District.
A really lovely way to spend hours just admiring the views, re living the child hood memories of steam engines, waving to other passengers and enjoying a ride on these great locomotives. Note there is a car park which currently charges Β£4 for two hours. The price of the tickets π is, or can be expensive however, if you are an enthusiast and recognise the good work by the paid staff and volunteers, it is a worthy cause to keep this going for generations to come.
π Family Action Verdict
Best for families with children who love trains or who want a scenic ride through landscapes that are hard to access any other way. The open-top carriages reward on clear days. Single fares with a return walk back through the fells suit adventurous families; return tickets are the easier option for those with young children.

βOnly did the single fare as we decided to walk back from Ravenglass over the hills back to our accommodation. 2025 prices are Β£16 single and Β£25 return .. on the basic open top carriages, and if you park in the car park its Β£8 all day. A coffee will cost you just under Β£4. The train takes 40 minutes from Dalegarth to Ravenglass, and travels very sedately. So sit back and enjoy the views.β

βWe stayed in the Maid of Kent camping coach accommodation and it was excellent. Clean, well equipped and a really fun weekend away. The railway also offers lots of activities, we went at the end of November and there was lots to do with the Christmas train rides (although book early to see Santa as this can sell out fast!).β

βExcellent railway , was 14 years since I last went there, this time my son wasnβt a baby so he enjoyed it. Lovely views of the Cumbrian countryside. The tickets are for set places on the train so unless the train isnβt full you canβt choose your seat.β
