We had a very nice visit to the Thinktank Museum in Birmingham. It was a great place to spend quality time with family, with lots of interesting and interactive exhibits. Our 11-year-old son especially enjoyed it and was excited throughout the visit. Overall, it was a fun, educational, and memorable experience for all of us.

🏆 Family Action Verdict

Best for families with children aged 5-12 who engage with hands-on science and historic technology. The ground floor alone is worth the visit for children fascinated by vehicles, engines, and large-scale machinery. Families with under-5s have a dedicated play area on the third floor.

ℹ️ What to Know Before You Go

💡Start on the ground floor — it consistently has the most impressive and interactive exhibits
The outdoor Science Garden is a strong option for physical play alongside the indoor galleries

We loved our visit here. The kids loved every minute spent at the Thinktank. There's so much to see... and so much to do. We didn’t get to see the whole place even though we spent almost 3hours here! Our visit here was definitely one of the highlights of the day. We will love to visit again.

Wonderful day out with my hubby and the kids at the Thinktank! Lots to see and do. The kids loved all the interactive aspects of the museum. Accessible toilets available. Cafe available. Would definitely go again.

Very varied science museum which seems popular with families with young children. For me it was a bit of a curates egg. Great ground floor with lots of iconic hardware from planes to pumps and trains to motorcycles. First floor was a bit bland by comparison and was much less interactive. Second floor was a slightly odd mix of futuristic and natural world. Third floor was dominated by a large play space that was being enjoyed by families with under 5 year old. Rather an expensive outing costing £52.50 for a family of 4 and without gift aid or any extras.

Overview

The ground floor holds the most praised exhibits — steam engines, historic trains, cars, and planes in a large open space. MiniBrum on a dedicated floor recreates a child-sized city for hands-on role play. The 4K planetarium runs ticketed shows. The outdoor Science Garden adds a physical play dimension. Special exhibitions and events including LEGO builds and Easter trails run throughout the year.
