📍 Oldham, North West
Spacious Oldham park with basketball courts, a rugby pitch, and the VIP community vegetable garden with café open Tuesday to Thursday. Playground equipment suits older children best.
Hidden gem in a residential area, the park is a huge benefit locally spanning a huge area of greenery, with lots of grass a small park, basket hall courts and a rugby pitch. It is great for a walk around with benches for seating and a ‘veg in the park’ community hub, with volunteers tending a large contained area growing veg and plants that can quite often be bought in the adjoining cabin that also serves as a cafe, workshop for local groups and committees and is a great meeting point - all overseen by a local lady, passionate about her vocation. The classes held there vary but I recently attended a craft group there, it was free and very enjoyable. They also hold seasonal workshops with wreath making etc also very reasonably priced and developed with the community in mind. The park is beautifully maintained with dry stone walking around the younger children’s activities and some featured walk ways and seating.
🏆 Family Action Verdict
Strongest for families with children aged 6 and up who'll use the sports courts and larger playground. The VIP community garden adds something genuinely different — seasonal workshops and a local café make it worth timing your visit for a Tuesday to Thursday. Toddlers will find sparse dedicated play options.

“Really nice park, not really much for younger children/toddlers though as the slide is too big amongst other things. Sport facilities and plenty of green space, great for an afternoon walk. Highly recommend visiting the Veg In The Park community garden too.”

Overview
Waterhead Park covers a large green area with basketball courts, a rugby pitch, and open grass for football. The VIP (Veg in the Park) community garden is the standout feature — volunteers tend raised beds and run seasonal workshops including wreath making and community events. A café operates within the garden space on sparse days. Playground equipment is sized for older children rather than toddlers.
