1 / 2Call Of The Wild Zoo
📍 Chelmsford, Greater London
Intimate zoo near Chelmsford featuring unusual animals in naturalistic enclosures, bird of prey displays, animal keeper experiences, and an indoor and outdoor play area. Annual memberships offer strong repeat-visit value.
Took my girlfriend to the monkey experience, and it was amazing. The keeper was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable and the monkeys clearly had a lot of trust in her. The animals and enclosures were clean and well looked after, plus when they said its a 30 minute experience they meant it. There wasn't a 15 minute health and safety breif which eats into your time! I wonder when this was, oh really? Would you like to do that? Overall a fantastic experience from start to finish.
🏆 Family Action Verdict
Best for families with children aged 2 to 8 who want an intimate zoo experience without the scale and queues of larger attractions. The keeper experiences and bird of prey displays add structured engagement beyond simply walking past enclosures. Annual memberships make it a strong regular destination for locally based families.

“Love coming here . Tickets are a lot cheaper compared to bigger zoos like Colchester . Got an annual zoo pass which is great value for money. They are expanding and improving the zoo all the time. A lovely new cafe has been built with lovely interior. The bird of prey displays are amazing and I love going to all the animal talks they do. Keepers are very friendly and knowledgeable. Not too busy and very peaceful to walk around the place . Lovely collection of animals to see:”

“Lovely zoo- easy coverable in 3 hours- with loads of unique and unusual animals/birds that we have not seen before at the other safari’s and wildlife parks that we have visited. The animal cages were neat and clean- and the animals were mostly in pairs or families- so they seemed happy. Loads of parking, The zoo shop has lots of variety, and there is a cafe where one can sit and enjoy a meal. Lovely experience overall. Recommended.”

“Great little Zoo, with a good choice of animals, my personal favourite were the penguins. Going midweek, there were plenty of parents/grandparents with toddlers, who all seemed to be having fun. There's an outdoor play area and a small indoor play area and cafe, and also a restaurant/cafe. There were outside eating areas but they were all closed on the day of our visit. Plenty of parking. We were there 2 hours.”

Overview
Call of the Wild Zoo focuses on species rarely seen at larger UK zoos, with animals housed in pairs or family groups. The bird of prey displays are consistently praised by reviewers. Keeper experiences allow close-contact access. An indoor and outdoor play area supplements the animal walk. A cafe with indoor seating is on-site. The zoo is expanding its enclosures and facilities progressively. Muddy paths after rain are the main practical concern — appropriate footwear is worth bringing.
