1 / 2Darcy Lever Gravel Pits
đ Darcy Lever, North West
A quiet woodland section of Moses Gate Country Park featuring interconnected ponds, wetland paths, and regular sightings of deer, badgers, buzzards, and seasonal tadpoles. Free to enter.
Great area for a countryside walk. Lots of paths cutting across the gravel pits. Lots of wildlife to see. This is a free to enter area and is suitable for most people, it is unsuitable for push chairs and wheel chairs as they would struggle along some of the paths. the paths can be particularly muddy in the winter months.
đ Family Action Verdict
Best for families with confident walkers aged 5 and up who want a genuine nature experience close to Bolton. Deer, badgers, and buzzard sightings are reliable enough to make it worth the trip. Pushchair users should plan an alternative route â most paths are not pram-friendly.

âFantastic for wildlife. So much can be seen in the dipping ponds and we ofter see deer, rabbits and even badger. Lovely to have an untouched reserve in town and right where I need it.â

âReally nice area, good for wildlife and generally much quieter than the other half of Moses Gate. Paths can get muddy in places.â

âPart of the Moses Gate Country Park, this is a quiet wooded area with a series of ponds and wetland areas that are easy to walk around. Nice to be able to relax and watch the wild life, currently tadpole season (June). Most areas easily accessible but I did not notice any parking area nearby.â

Overview
Darcy Lever Gravel Pits sits within Moses Gate Country Park and offers a series of ponds and wetland areas linked by walking paths through mature woodland. Wildlife sightings include deer, rabbits, badgers, and buzzards overhead. June visits coincide with tadpole season in the dipping ponds. Paths can become heavily muddy after rain, and the uneven terrain rules out pushchairs and wheelchairs across much of the area.
