1 / 2Epping Signalling Museum
📍 Epping, Greater London
Preserved LU signal cabin at Epping station where families handle authentic railway controls overlooking live Central Line trains. Volunteer guides explain safety systems hands-on. Also features a climbable 95-year-old locomotive.
Fabulous tour with Bob who happily shared his knowledge on all things signalling. Including the almost live signalling operation of Epping station at the end of the tour. The little museum displays such an array of artefacts and of course the big yellow shunting locomotive where you can sit in the drivers seat. Really enjoyed this visit. Thank you Bob and all the other volunteers to keep this bit of history alive.
🏆 Family Action Verdict
Best for families with children who are drawn to trains, engineering, or hands-on learning — the ability to operate real signal levers is genuinely rare and tends to hold children's attention far longer than expected.

“We had a fantastic tour with Peter today! We only planned to stop by for a quick look, but ended up staying for an hour and a half. We learned so many fascinating things, and both our children and we were absolutely delighted. Peter himself made the experience even more special — he guided us with such enthusiasm and genuine love for what he does. Truly unforgettable! Highly recommend visiting!”

“An excellent visit to the Epping signalling museum. The volunteers were very knowledgable and very passionate in what they do - It is extremely rare they let you touch the signalling control columns, let alone letting you to test it. We had an excellent time and wish everyone well at the museum”

“This is a hands-on experience of a miniature lever frame signal box. The staff were excellent and could not do enough for us. They were very knowledgeable and spent time explaining everything. I'm considering volunteering to help keep this little part of history going.”
