Hertfordshire Zoo
📍 Broxbourne, Greater London
Hertfordshire Zoo combines diverse animal species — big cats, primates, birds, and small mammals — with an animatronic World of Dinosaurs area and the Tumble Jungle play zone. Sensory warnings are posted throughout for neurodivergent visitors.
A fun zoo. We travelled to see the new Rufus Sengi (elephant shrew), one of only two pairs in the UK. We did see them unfortunately there was alot of condensation on their window and you couldn't go close because they are settling in so no good pics. The animals have large enclosures with much enrichment. Many you can see from ground level and elevated enclosures which is lovely and great for photography. The bird display is educational and has more unusual birds such as the kookaburra and caracara. The cafes have food that is better value and taste than your average tourist attraction. Shops worth a visit. The dinosaurs are worth a visit. Animatronic and some great Instagramable photo ops if that's your thing. Some good to with a bit of a refresh, but it's a nice extra. The park is quiet on weekends between after Halloween and pre Xmas activities.
🏆 Family Action Verdict
Best for families with children of any age, and particularly recommended for neurodivergent children and those with autism — the zone-entry warning system lets families prepare for each area's sensory environment before entering. The dinosaur area consistently earns five-star specific mentions from families who drove four-plus hours.

“What a beautiful day out this place offers. Was amazing to see the animatronic dinosaurs and the zoo animals. One of the best we visited. We especially appreciated how they had “warnings” telling us about how certain areas may be so neurodivergent people know what to expect in said areas. Will definitely be back.”

“We visited in February half term. It was a very cold but dry day and the zoo wasn't overly busy meaning we could see all the animals easily. A great range of animals to see and it was well laid out. We alsi enjoyed the moving dinosaur area. There were new enclosures being created which is a positive sign.”
