A great hidden treasure. Signposted from nearby car park. A good place for the whole family to visit. There are volunteers in place to give you information on the area, birds, insects etc. Areas to view the lake and birds, with an accessible tower to see the view. Drinks available, with other items for sale, magnets, postcards, etc. But access to the building is free.

🏆 Family Action Verdict

Best for families with children who enjoy wildlife spotting and nature exploration — the volunteers make the experience genuinely educational rather than passive. Walkable from Cheshunt station, making it easy to reach without a car. Late afternoons deliver the best light on the water and most active birdlife.

â„đïļ What to Know Before You Go

ðŸ’ĄWalk directly from Cheshunt train station — the route is flat and well-signposted
⏰Scan the bittern hide first thing — water rails and kingfishers are regularly spotted there
🎟ïļAsk volunteers for current sightings before heading out on the lake trail
🚗Bring binoculars — the tower views stretch across the full lake

“Brilliant volunteers gave advice about what to see and where to walk. Also made a couple of coffees, much appreciated. Sat in the bittern hide to drink our coffees, and a water rail walked across in full view. Later, walking round the lake, saw GS woodpecker and some parakeets. Ate our lunch at picnic table near car park. Would highly recommend.”

“I love, love, love this hide! It's easy to reach on foot from Cheshunt train station, it's triple height and the views are brilliant, especially towards the close of the afternoon when the sun glitters on the water. Glorious!”
