1 / 3Mangapps Railway & Museum
📍 Burnham-on-Crouch, Greater London
Privately-owned working railway museum in Essex with 18 steam and diesel locomotives, 80+ carriages and wagons, and unlimited return rides on a three-quarter-mile standard gauge line.
Had the pleasure of a great visit to Mangapps and wish I’d come years before. A really impressive collection in a really relaxed atmosphere - an ideal place to wander around and forget about the rest of the world. Plenty to see and lots of historical displays on show - caters for both the main line and London Underground excellently. Top marks and will be back!
🏆 Family Action Verdict
Best for train-enthusiast families and children who enjoy hands-on exploring — climbing on vintage carriages and watching active restoration work adds depth beyond a standard museum visit. The relaxed, unhurried atmosphere suits families who want to spend several hours wandering rather than following a set programme.

“A great place to visit if you enjoy exploring old railway engines, carriages and rail related memorabilia. It's a working restoration place too, so you can see what's going on. Kids will love it too if they like climbing on things. You can even get a short ride in a carriage, towed generally by heritage diesel.”

“A great day out for the general enthusiast to the family. Family run private collection of railway memorabilia and rolling stock. Some of the rolling stock is the last examples left. a worthy visit for anyone. Friendly service, a cafe area. A true hidden gem that should not be left to the visiting tourist.”
