1 / 2Matlock Bath Aquarium and arcade
π Matlock, North West
This Victorian-era aquarium houses over 50 species including axolotls, turtles, and frogs, plus a thermal pool with giant koi carp visitors can feed. One of Europe's largest public hologram displays and gemstone and fossil exhibits add to the visit.
As small attractions go this one is well worth a visit. All the tanks are lovely and clean. The fish (plus all their little friends) are healthy and clearly well looked after. Take your time and acquaint yourself with the large Grouper. He (or she) loves the camera and will follow you around posing like a top model. There is a large outdoor pool with some stunning koi carp. Fish food can be obtained for a small fee. Go on.... treat the fish to a snack or two. In addition to the live exhibits there is a fascinating holographic gallery. The quality of the laser graphics is amazing. There is a hall of mirrors which will amuse the younger clients plus one particular mirror for the body conscious to look out for........ Size 8 anyone?
π Family Action Verdict
Best for families with young children who want an interactive aquarium experience without committing to a full day. The koi feeding moment is a highlight for any age. Allow about an hour β the venue is compact and most families complete it comfortably in that time.

βΒ£6.50 entry fee (under 4βs free) which is reasonable for the amount of variety this small establishment has to offer. I particularly liked the thermal pool with the different coloured koi (50p gumball machines with fish food to buy). The aquarium inhabitants were fun; fish, axolotls, turtles, frogs, I especially loved the Giant Gourami, who was a sweetie of a fish. Thereβs local history information, a petrifying well that turns things to stone, hologram gallery and small hall of mirrors. I also enjoyed the illuminated walk of mirrored lights. And to top it off an arcade to spend a few coppers. I recommend a visit to pass away an hour or so.β

βWe visited Matlock bath and were waiting for the gardens to open for the Illuminations event. I wasn't expecting the aquarium to be as packed as it was. It's a little 'tardis' and seems to keep going once inside. There are many tanks with different aquatic life, but the highlight for me was the old swimming baths which is filled up with the spring waters, and enjoyed by the giant koi carp. Of course you can buy a handful of food from a gumball machine and feed them too. Also inside were some holographic pictures and a hall of mirrors. Recommended, especially for the price.β

βSomewhat reasonably priced for what you get, we had a look at the aquariums and the koi swimming pool which were cool and you can pay 50p for some fish food for them. It was interesting to look at the different quartz, fossils and illusions that they had on display. It's not a massive place so Β£6.50 might feel expensive to some people but as a one off visit it was alright. We went to the arcade afterwards which makes you feel like you're at the seaside β¨οΈβ

Overview
The building is compact and opens into more space than its exterior suggests β reviewers consistently describe a tardis-like experience. The thermal koi pool is the centrepiece, with coin-operated food dispensers letting children feed fish directly. A large grouper in one of the tanks is noted as particularly interactive. Hologram displays, distorting mirrors, and a petrifying well extend the visit beyond a standard aquarium. Under-4s enter free.
