1 / 3North Weald & District Miniature Railway
📍 Harlow, Greater London
A 7¼-inch gauge miniature railway running a mile-long track through Harlow Garden Centre grounds to Woodland Halt. Volunteer-operated with steam, diesel, and electric locomotives. Special seasonal events include Christmas Santa specials.
Great experience for the whole family despite travelling for 2hrs, it was definitely worth it. All staff very friendly and amiable especially Nathan. Love the effort made in decorating the whole sight to make it a great experience for all visiting. Would recommend this for train enthusiasts or otherwise for a fun family day out.
🏆 Family Action Verdict
A strong pick for train-loving families with children of all ages. The mile-long run gives a proper journey feel rather than a short loop. Volunteer enthusiasm is genuine and communicates to children. The Santa Special adds seasonal magic.

“We have come a few times to ride the train as it is great value for money, but today we came for the Santa Special. It is very magical for the children and included a gift.”

“Amazing miniature railway track . Public run will be starting shortly . I went there to help voluntarily to help to set up some junction boxes .”

“We initially went into the garden centre thinking that the railway was located somewhere inside, we had completely missed any signs that suggested it was the other end of the car park (and there was a bit of work going on installing EV charging points, so there may well have been signs that we missed!) We eventually managed to locate the ticket office and picked up some tickets for me and the kids. While you wait they have a small playground area for the kids to play on, as well as some picnic benches if required. On our visit they had a couple of trains running - the tracks were a fair length, and there is a station that you can get off at. This station is where the engine is removed and turned around for going back to the beginning. It was a nice journey, although I guess the grounds could have been a bit more 'developed' although there is a fair size so can appreciate the amount of work that would probably take! A nice miniature railway - and we were glad we managed to catch it open for a ride!”
