This was a lovely mini railway to visit at Christmas time, set by a tiny station hut at the edge of Pugneys Country Park! Old adverts are displayed here for travelling to towns across the UK and the mini railway is single track for the majority of its route besides any passing sections, there is a mock mini level crossing and a second station we stop at which is cute. The line casts views over the lake and the greenery across the park, a section runs through a loop under the trees which incorporated moving figures like snowmen and varied Christmas lights. An underground section was next where a Santa actor came out to give us Pugneys Light Railway Christmas decorations for trees and icicle lights are worked into here, leads out to a machine shooting out snow!

🏆 Family Action Verdict

Best for families with train-loving toddlers and young children who want an affordable, relaxed outing in a proper country park. The inclusive approach from volunteers makes it genuinely welcoming for children with additional needs. Pair the railway with the adjacent playground and lakeside walk for a half-day out.

I had a blast on the Pugneys Light Railway today. Everyone I met there was superb, from the lady taking tickets to the gentleman driving the train. I had a very excitable autistic young man with me and everyone gave us plenty of space so I could make sure he was safe and enjoyed himself. The ride itself was really fun, there were two trains running so pretty much no wait to ride, and it was only £2 a head which is cracking great value. I may have to go back on my own some time!

Overview

Pugneys Light Railway operates from Lakeside Station inside Pugneys Country Park, running a 750-yard single-track loop with passing sections. Two named steam engines — Jane and Sapphire — pull open passenger carriages past the lakeside setting. Volunteers run all sessions and are known for being welcoming and patient, including with children who have additional needs. Winter Wonderland rides add festive effects and decorations each Christmas season.
