1 / 2Putney Leisure Centre
π London, Greater London
Leisure centre in Putney with swimming pools, gym, fitness classes, steam room, sauna, and Swim Happy lessons for all ages. Party packages include bouncy castles and soft play hire. Free parking available.
I go to Putney Leisure Centre regularly for the gym, swimming, steam room, and sauna, and honestly, itβs excellent value for money for a full membership. The classes are great β thereβs a really good variety and the instructors are capable and enthusiastic. The gym is fully equipped with everything you could possibly need, the pool is a good size, and both the sauna and steam room are solid and well maintained. The staff are awesome β always friendly and helpful β and the atmosphere is welcoming. Itβs great for all ages and has a really nice, friendly mix of people. Overall, Iβd highly recommend it.
π Family Action Verdict
Families with swimming-age children who want a well-run, multi-facility leisure centre in southwest London will find Putney consistent and reliable. Lifeguard enforcement of lane rules can be inconsistent for confident young swimmers β speak to the duty manager if rules are applied unevenly.

βWe had a lovely experience at the Leisure Centre yesterday. My sons and I thoroughly enjoyed our time in the pool, and I was particularly impressed by the staff's professionalism. A huge thank you to the lifeguard team for their high level of attentivenessβit provided great peace of mind. Additionally, Omar at reception was incredibly welcoming and warm, making our arrival seamless. We are already looking forward to our next visit!β

βWe have been. Swimming at Putney for years and it has been ok, nothing special to write about but our last swim was absolutely horrible and left my son so embarrassed by the life guards appalling behaviour. My son is a confident swimmer and often swims next to me when going into the deep end. I was swimming in the deep end with my older child when my youngest walked round and jumped in the deep end with us. We sat reading water and swimming off the wall and back. We then decided to swim to the shallow end. As we pushed off we heard a whistle from the life guards, I looked up and looked at him he said nothing and we carried on a few more strokes heard a whistle looked up and again made eye contact did not say anything and carried on. My son swam the length by himself with me next to him till he could stand. When we got there the life guards who was closet called me and not me as my son could not swim that he had to stay behind the non swimmer line. I argued that he had just seen him swim the whole way back by himself so how could he say he was a non swimmer. My son heard the life guards comments and was so upset by them that it ruined the rest of our swim and now he does not want to return. This behaviour is just terrible! If you don't think that a parent can be trusted to know their child's capabilities then why demand that they need to be present when swimming with their child. Sitting their in your trainers and socks totally not prepared to help anyone drowning quickly does not give you the right to judge a child's ability when you have just seen him swim by himself. Just to note that prior to this he had been swimming independently and jumping into he pool in the deep end by himself with me a short distance away, way past the non swimmer line with no issues.β

βIf you don't have kids you won't have a good experience here. Membership only changing rooms that are 18+ frequently filled with poorly behaved kids and their parents who encourage them. Staff seem unsurprised by this and while they seemingly may attempt to prevent this, I've found myself being screamed at, gawked at, or completely stressed out by multiple unmonitored or poorly monitored kids that already have a full run of almost the entire centre, so the one place they aren't allowed ends up no longer being a safe haven from children screaming or misbehaving as kids do PureGym is just up the road, and for much less a month you can look out windows onto greenery while working out with confidence that you can have a good experience, use good equipment, protect your peace and get changed without a teenager loitering in the locker rooms pretending to be looking for absolutely nothing for 20 minutes so he can gawk at you getting changed. Staff always polite for the most part, so this isn't an issue with their friendliness, as they're all quite lovely and understandably working in a centre overrun with families is going to effectively cater to positive experiences predominantly for family members and the warts and all of anywhere filled with adolescents.β
