The Castle Climbing Centre
📍 London, Greater London
Indoor and outdoor climbing in a converted Victorian water pumping station — 330+ boulder problems, 230+ top-rope routes, and 110+ lead routes. Family taster sessions run 90 minutes with dedicated instructors.
The staff excels at customer service! They were very responsive and helpful to my questions. They gym has so many routes and hidden sections! You will find routes of all different difficulties and using many different techniques. They said they use the French grading scale for their routes. There are a few small negatives to this amazing place. Die to the age of the facility it does have an odor to it. Perhaps they need to replace some mats? It is obvious that the routes stay on the wall for a long time. There are also a lot of routes per rope. While this can lead to variety it also leads to a lot of confusion. Most of the holds were so dirty and covered in grime it was very difficult to tell which holds were for the route I was trying to climb. Ultimately the positives vastly outweigh the negatives. I had a great time climbing here and would do it again!
🏆 Family Action Verdict
Best for families with children aged 10 and up keen to try climbing in a genuinely unique setting. Family taster sessions cover bouldering, rope climbing, and auto-belay in around 90 minutes with patient, expert instructors. The venue suits complete beginners through to advanced climbers simultaneously.

“We arrived for a family taster session with my 10 years old son. ❤️ With another 2 families we were welcomed at the café, where you can buy lots of yummy stuff if you need a power boost and you can shop for climbing shoes, chalk, etc. At the main building we were again welcomed by a lovely member of staff. 😊 In a designate area we waited for our instructor who turned out to be Ben. He was super calm, very friendly and helpful all the way. Within that 90 minutes we were able to try bouldering, climbing with ropes and see and feel how the autobelay works. The place itself is absolutely massive, loads of fun with plenty of options to climb for every level. We had a great time, thank you! 😁👍🏻”

“Did a beginners climbing course with Lux which was SO FUN AND INFORMATIVE! Educational, clear, took us through all the basics of knot tying, climbing techniques, and all that jazz - inspired a (hopefully lifelong) new joy in my 'climbing journey' - most emphatic compliments to the coach! And good luck to him for LA 2028! (Also the Castle itself is great - interesting route-setting, chilled out climber vibe).”

“Wicked day out. My friends and I thoroughly enjoyed the introduction to top roping course. Ollie was our instructor and he was fantastic. Friendly, knowledgeable and made the whole experience really enjoyable. Can’t recommend The Castle enough. I’ll definitely be back and I’m planning on bringing my younger brother and sister along soon.”
