RYA-accredited sailing, kayaking, canoeing, paddleboarding, and powerboat courses on a Manchester reservoir. Dedicated SEND-accessible sessions, holiday clubs, changing rooms, disabled toilets, and free parking.
What a fantastically run venueβ¦ I found it hard to believe it was council owned as every other interaction with a council sports centre has been subservient in comparison. The staff are lovely here - I brought my son for the first time to try windsurfing. I wasnβt overly optimistic as he is only 6 and I imagined it would be quite difficultβ¦ but I was so impressed! The wetsuits and life jackets are included in the price of the session (which was Β£6-8 from memory) and they have changing facilities on site for men and women. Once changed my son was encouraged to help the rest of the boys/girls carry out the surfboards from the stores - I thought this was a very clever way of having them bond and giving them responsibility. They were then shown how to set up the boards and carried them out to the lake. The session lasted hours - the staff were in the lake on a motorboat should any of the kids need assistance. My son fell in a few times and although upset they managed to convince him to carry onβ¦ which has ultimately paid off as he now cannot wait to return. Theres a lovely community feel to the centre and I felt very moved by the level of commitment the staff had to the children. In a world where water-sports are often inaccessible to children who cannot afford a wetsuit, let alone a board, this cuts through the privilege and gives an opportunity for all. The only negative thing I have to comment on (which is most likely not in the hands of the staff) was the changing rooms being tired and in need of a revamp. It would be lovely to see some money poured into the facility as it clearly pours benefits into the community in tenfold. My son hasnβt stopped talking about this place - weβve since been back for holiday club (Β£25 a dayβ¦ bargain) and intend to become members after the school holidays are finished. Thank you Debdale Outdoor Centre!
π Family Action Verdict
Outstanding for families seeking affordable water sports with inclusive instruction β children from age 6 try windsurfing, and wheelchair users join boat trips with adapted support. Holiday club sessions run across school breaks for multi-day skill building.

βGreat place to learn to sail. Coarse was over 2days at the weekend and this one was run by Chris. He explained all that would be involved for us to do throughout the coarse. We spent half the time each day out on the water and the only issue was lack of wind but was still able to get practice in to pass the coarse. Very relaxed friendly place and the young volunteers who help us were very understanding of us being novices. Due to issues of lack of wind had been offered couple free sessions when we want to help us get more experience. Would recommend this outdoor centre to all wanting to learn to sail or do other water based activities.β

βBooked for my 2 kids had a brilliant time. Will definitely go again My two children have had the most amazing summer attending the HAF sessions and holiday club here at Debdale. They have experienced so many brilliant activities. They have gained knowledge and confidence and had fun. Great staff and fantastic team lead by Martin. Special mention to Evie too. Thank you allβ

βI have been to Debdale for the last 2 Fridays to take a group of students canoeing. The staff have been amazing. Martin has been in constant contact to make sure that the needs of my group were met. The instructors have been so welcoming and accommodating. Looking forward to taking another group next year. Would highly recommend Debdale to anyone school group.β
