1 / 2Ellenroad Engine House Steam Museum
đ Rochdale, North West
Living steam museum in Rochdale with the world's largest working mill engine, plus an active boiler house and blacksmith shop. Children enter free; best visited on first-weekend steaming days.
Great site, visit when in steam 1st weekend in the month. Even better go when there's an event, vintage cars. Fantastic engine is the star but boiler room, blacksmith shop all open and working. Bot tricky getting around if you have mobility issues, but there is stair lift to upper level. Volunteers very knowledgeable and helpful. Small tea bar avaliable.
đ Family Action Verdict
Best for families with children curious about engineering, industrial history, or how large machines actually work. The first weekend of each month delivers the full live-steam experience â plan around that rather than turning up on a quiet Tuesday. Children enter free and volunteers invest real time explaining the machinery.

âWhat a fantastic place - a real living museum where you step back in time to see the industrial powerhouse. All the volunteers were extremely helpful and had plenty of time to chat and talk about the engine. The cake was also nice from the cafe!â

âAn excellent day out with the children. There's so much history and a working steam powered engine. ÂŖ5 adults and children go free, all monies go towards the upkeep. A must see.â
