1 / 3Lancashire Mining Museum CIO
📍 Manchester, North West
Lancashire's only surviving colliery headgear and winding house across a 15-acre site. Entry is free. The massive twin tandem steam winding engine runs on the last Sunday of each month.
Love this place... cycling along the canal path and decided to call in. Very friendly staff who are knowledgeable and passionate about the museum which is fascinating and plenty to see. Had the pleasure of seeing the engine room in glory with the impressive engine working. Had a lovely lunch in the beautiful cafe and finished the day with a few photos in the miners cottage
🏆 Family Action Verdict
Best for families with school-age children interested in industrial history and machinery. Volunteer guides bring the colliery's history to life with first-hand accounts. The last Sunday of each month is the optimal visit day for operational engines and railway rides. The site is large — allow at least half a day.

“Lots to see, history and machinery. Lovely volunteers, very engaging people, went with a photography group, very accommodating. Not posh but with plenty of character and informality in buckets instead. I enjoy macro photography, had a great time.”
