Manchester Art Gallery
π Manchester, North West
Manchester Art Gallery holds one of the UK's largest pre-Raphaelite collections alongside L.S. Lowry, William Holman Hunt, and contemporary rotating exhibitions. Free admission in Manchester city centre.
The most incredible collection of original pre-Raphaelites in a UK free public art gallery. A place of peace and tranquility, at quiet times, interesting touring temporary shows/exhibits too, but itβs the huge stunning Victorian masterpieces in their vivid colours, that make this place unique
π Family Action Verdict
Best for families with children aged 8 and up who can engage with figurative and historical painting at their own pace. Free admission removes the pressure of maximising value, making a one-hour visit as valid as a two-hour one.

βManchester Art Gallery is a great place to spend a few hours. The space itself is beautiful and well laid out, making it easy to explore without feeling overwhelming. The exhibitions are thoughtfully curated, with a good mix of classic and contemporary work that keeps things interesting. Itβs calm, inspiring, and well maintained, with clear information throughout so you can actually engage with the art rather than just walk past it. A really good cultural spot right in the city centre and definitely worth a visit whether youβre into art or just want something different to do.β

βlocated in the heart of the city, Manchester Art Gallery is a gem. The staff are warm and genuinely knowledgeable, happy to share the story of the gallery and its evolution over time. The range of art β from historic works to modern and contemporary pieces. I particularly enjoyed Valetteβs work, which truly captures the spirit and atmosphere of Manchester The Sikh exhibition was also a highlight β, thoughtful and beautifully curated. A gallery that feels both rooted in history and confidently contemporary. Definitely worth a visit.β

Overview
The gallery's permanent collection spans Victorian oil paintings, pre-Raphaelite works in vivid original colours, and contemporary pieces including work by Valette and Lowry. Temporary exhibitions rotate through a dedicated space. The building itself is a Victorian civic structure with high-ceilinged galleries that reward unhurried exploration. Staff are consistently praised by reviewers for their knowledge of the collection's history and evolution.
