Smithills Open Farm Absolutely fantastic day out for families – one of the best open farms we’ve visited in the UK. From the moment you arrive, it’s clear how much care and effort goes into making this a brilliant experience for both children and adults. The farm is spacious, well laid out, and immaculately kept, with loads to do without ever feeling overcrowded or rushed. The animal areas are excellent – plenty of opportunities to get up close, feed animals, and learn about them. Everything feels well managed, safe, and genuinely focused on animal welfare, which really matters. The staff are friendly, knowledgeable, and clearly enjoy what they do; they’re great with kids and happy to answer questions. There’s a fantastic mix of indoor and outdoor activities, which makes it ideal regardless of the weather. The play areas are superb, catering to different ages, and give children plenty of freedom to explore and burn off energy. You can easily spend a full day here without running out of things to do. Food and facilities are also very good – clean toilets, good cafΓ© options, and plenty of seating areas to take a break. It’s one of those places that’s clearly designed with families in mind, so everything just works smoothly. Overall, Smithills Open Farm strikes the perfect balance between fun, education, and relaxation. It’s not just entertaining for kids – adults genuinely enjoy it too. Excellent value for money and somewhere we’d happily return to again and again. Highly recommended. 🌟

πŸ† Family Action Verdict

Best for families with children under 12 who want a full day of varied outdoor activities rather than a single attraction. The combination of animal feeding, educational demonstrations, and seasonal events works across different ages in the same group. Tractor rides run hourly β€” plan your timing around them as they're the most popular slot.

ℹ️ What to Know Before You Go

πŸ’‘Plan your arrival around the hourly tractor ride schedule β€” it's the most in-demand activity
⏰Bring a picnic or budget for the cafe and farm shop on top of entry costs β€” extras add up for large families
🎟️Seasonal events like pumpkin picking and Easter egg hunts require separate booking in advance
πŸš—The farm works well in wet weather with covered areas, so don't cancel plans at the first sign of rain

β€œWe visited Smithills Open Farm during the school holidays with the kids, and it was such a fantastic day out! The highlight was seeing the full process of how cows are milked and how the milk is stored β€” really fascinating and educational. The children loved getting hands-on, feeding the cows and other farm animals, and learning more about farm life. There are so many activities for kids, and it’s a great balance of fun and education. The staff were friendly and made the experience engaging for both children and adults. Overall, a brilliant day out for families β€” highly recommend!”

β€œLovely walk around farm, nice area and peaceful. Handfeeding of animals, donkey rides, parks, and good space to walk around. Events go on all day such as a animal show to watch and hold farm animals, tractor ride which runs around once and hour which could do with more slots. Fresh produce available to buy such as really nice ice cream.”

β€œWe go every year for pumkin picking, the petting farm, tractor ride and ice cream. Very enjoyable, professional service, very efficient and friendly. Great value for money there's usually 10+ of us. It was pouring with rain and everyone still had a great time. Its a must visit for kids and adults of all ages. X”
