This is a beautiful woodland retreat, perfect for a peaceful walk surrounded by nature. The tall trees and winding trails create a serene atmosphere, with birdsong and fresh air enhancing the experience. The landscape is a mix of open meadows and dense forest, offering scenic variety along the way. However, the paths can get quite muddy after rain, so good walking shoes are essential. Despite the mud, it’s a lovely spot for a relaxing hike and a great escape from the city.

🏆 Family Action Verdict

Best for active families with older children who can handle hilly, sometimes muddy terrain and appreciate unstructured outdoor time over organised activities. Cyclists, dog walkers, and hikers all use the site comfortably. Young children who need flat, paved paths or fenced play areas will find the terrain challenging.

ℹ️ What to Know Before You Go

💡Wear boots or trail shoes — paths become muddy and slippery after rain
Three car parks serve different entry points: Caterham, Farthing Down, and Chaldon
🎟️Check livestock notices before entering fenced meadow sections
🚗No facilities on-site — bring water and snacks for the full walk

Came up here for a boxing day cycle to blow away the cobwebs and get rid of the festive "stir crazy" feeling being indoors for days. Am still grinning. Such a lovely spot to cycle to. Great views, had a bit of low winter sun and the hills were invigorating to climb. Lovely spot, quite close to home too. Really don't know why I don't come here more often!

A safe beautiful and peaceful place to walk dogs and hike. So many paths to choose from in every direction. Car parks at Caterham side, Farthing Down and Chaldon. But you have to be prepared to go up and down hill. Open fields and woods and commons with wildlife but sheep and cows are fenced in and there’s plant of notices when they are around.

Beautiful area, nice footpaths with charming autumn colours and easy hills to walk around and get ride of the noise and the pollution of the main city. Not for everyone as some paths might be slippery and muddy, but a place to enjoy, chill and pop up for fresh air and nice surrounding.

Overview

Happy Valley covers open meadows, dense woodland, and hilly commons accessible from three car parks. The terrain is genuinely hilly — not a flat circuit. Livestock including sheep and cows graze in fenced areas alongside the paths. The woodland sections deliver strong seasonal variety, with autumn colour and winter frost cited by repeat visitors. No facilities on-site — visitors bring their own food and drink.
