1 / 2Observatory Science Centre & Museum
π Hailsham, Greater London
Interactive science centre at Herstmonceux in East Sussex, housed in original Royal Observatory domes, with over 100 exhibits across Earth & Beyond, Light & Colour, and Forces galleries, plus an outdoor Discovery Park with water play.
Attended the Perseids shooting stars event this year. The place is beautiful to visit, with a lot of interactive activities to do. The event started with an interesting talk from one of their astrophysicist, quite informative. Then we moved into groups and rotated around all the domes. The knowledge and passion of the volunteers was amazing to see and hear. It's well worth a visit, especially on one of their special evenings. Will definitely be back in the future.
π Family Action Verdict
Best for families with children aged five and above who enjoy experimenting rather than passive viewing. The outdoor Discovery Park suits toddlers on warm days. Stargazing evenings are the unmissable premium experience β book early as places are capped.

βThis is a fantastic spot for both kids and space-loving adults. We were lucky enough to have a clear night and saw Saturnβs rings and Jupiter through telescopes. It was absolutely breath-taking. Beyond the historic equipment, there are tons of hands-on science exhibits to keep the kids engaged. Highly recommend for a family night out!β

β+ve: Very reasonably priced science centre with a focus on physics and astronomy. Lots of interesting interactive displays both inside and outside, big and small. Very enthusiastic and hardworking staff. When we went both Ivor and Gary gave very good talks about space travel and astronomy respectively, and all other staff were friendly and welcoming. Nice little cafe doing hot and cold drinks and snacks. Small shop with lots of interesting items for the kids -ve: We went on a windy and chilly day; there didn't seem to be any heating on inside and it was extremely cold throughout the centre. Wrap up warm if it's a cold day! Probably because of the cold the little cafe was extremely busy. The staff worked very hard but the cafe isn't really suitable for more than small groups trickling in and out, so items quickly became unavailable and there was a long wait for food. Consider taking your own food and drink. Some of the displays either weren't working at all or were a bit tired. A lot of them could do with an overhaul and some tlc. Overall I would return, in warmer weather, and would be very interested in attending one of their evening astronomy events.β

Overview
The Observatory Science Centre occupies the six copper domes of the former Royal Greenwich Observatory at Herstmonceux. Indoor galleries hold working exhibits on forces, light, electricity, and space, operated hands-on by visitors. The outdoor Discovery Park includes large-scale physics playground equipment and a water channel with dams and locks. Special stargazing evenings use the historic refractor telescopes β on clear nights Saturn's rings and Jupiter's moons are visible.
