1 / 3Orrell Water Park
π Wigan, North West
Peaceful Wigan park encircling two fishing lakes via mostly flat, pram-accessible paths. Benches throughout, free parking, children's playgrounds on-site, and a seasonal cafe serving ice cream and drinks.
Orrell Water Park is a lovely little spot thatβs perfect for a peaceful walk or a bit of outdoor time with family. The park itself is well-kept, with two fishing lakes, ducks to watch, and a nice flat path that makes for an easy stroll. Itβs quiet, clean, and feels like a bit of countryside tucked into the town. We usually do a longer route from the water park up to Billinge Hill, and itβs a brilliant walk. The trail takes you through a mix of woodland, fields, and country lanes, with plenty of scenic views along the way. Once you reach the top of Billinge Hill, the view is amazing β you can see right across to Winter Hill, and even the Welsh hills on a clear day. Itβs a great route for getting out in nature without needing to travel far. Definitely recommend it for walkers of all levels β just wear decent footwear if it's been raining, as it can get muddy in parts.
π Family Action Verdict
Best for families with pushchairs or toddlers who want a proper outdoor walk without uneven terrain. The two-lake circuit is short enough for young children to complete and calm enough for relaxed pram pushing. Families visiting in wet weather should come prepared with suitable footwear β the paths deteriorate quickly after rain.

βLovely place to come for a walk or to chill out for a bit. It was popular when I visited, but wasn't too busy such that you could still walk around and find empty benches (though it was a bitter January day, so I can imagine during summer this location may be very busy). Plenty of ducks and geese to feed (please research food that is good for them - no bread!). It is very easy to get here from the railway station, though there is also a small car park available.β

βLovely place to walk. 2 lakes with a pram friendly path most of the way around (few tree roots to navigate). Plenty of benches to sit & admire the view onto the water. Lots of bins. Cafe on site but not open when I went in October. Free parking but gate closes in the evening. Children's playgrounds clean & tidy. Lots of birds to see. Can get a bit muddy in Autumn/Winter. Fishing lake too.β

βLovely peaceful walk around the lake, flat and accessible, lots of benches for resting/taking in the view, lots of people fishing. Has a cafe selling food, beers, gorgeous icecreams too!β

Overview
Orrell Water Park loops around two scenic lakes along predominantly flat paths with only occasional tree roots to navigate. Benches are plentiful for resting with lake views. The site has fishing spots, ducks and geese to observe, and children's playground areas separate from the main walking route. A cafe operates seasonally offering drinks and ice cream as takeaway. Paths turn muddy after rain β waterproof footwear is worth packing.
