1 / 3South Norwood Country Park
π London, Greater London
Local nature reserve with a central lake, two playgrounds split by age, pram-friendly paths, free entry, and free parking. Dogs welcome throughout. Regular wildlife sightings include foxes, rabbits, and diverse birdlife.
Great park that really feels like an escape from the city. Long walking paths take you to plenty of perfect spots for dogs, and itβs very dog-friendly with lots of pups around, especially on weekends if your dog likes to play off leash. Youβll also see plenty of birdlife, especially by the lake, along with lots of other wildlife.
π Family Action Verdict
Best for families with dogs wanting a genuine nature escape within Greater London at zero cost. The lake is the centrepiece β older children enjoy wildlife spotting as younger ones use the dedicated playground. The winding layout is part of the charm for adventurous kids, and bring a phone with maps for a first visit. Paths are unlit after dark.

βThis is an absolutely fabulous park in Norwood. There are beautiful open spaces to walk your dog and lovely paths under trees. There is a huge lake which is home to many birds and wildlife. Very relaxing part of London. Canβt recommend enough to spend some time walking here and it is surprisingly quiet.β

βDog walkers multiple times a day (yet pretty poo free). Childrenβs play areas, one for bigger (or braver) kids, the other for younger. Random groups of people seem to be βDoing Thingsβ. Lots of bikes. One lake, one stream, one pond (or huge puddle). One very random collection of shopping trolleys behind barbed wire. Having been round here with a running group I can say that all the small bumps add up to make A Huge Mound. It is unbelievably easy to get lost in this small area due to the bumps and hills and fences and streams. Itβs actually a labyrinth. It is however, not the countryside. It has tram stops at three corners and a main road on the other side. There are newsagents, a leisure centre and a train station. And it has all the problems of an unlit area in South East London, with hillocks and hedges and dark paths. But hey. You wonβt go 2 minutes without seeing a dog walker. If you want to go at night, let us know what itβs like.β

βLovely local nature reserve which has a lake in the middle with lots of birds and wildlife. You can often see foxes and rabbits in the summer, along with butterflies and birds. There is a volunteer team who work really hard to maintain this for people to use. Kids playground in the centre and a kiosk which is run by volunteers on the weekend. It would be five stars if Croydon Council stumped up the funds and efforts to fully maintain parts of this park that only they can.β

Overview
South Norwood Country Park wraps around a central lake maintained by a volunteer team. Two separate playgrounds cater to different age groups. Paths are pram-accessible across most of the site. Wildlife sightings from the lake edge include ducks, geese, foxes, rabbits, and butterflies. A volunteer-run kiosk operates on weekends. The layout uses hills and natural barriers that can disorient first-time visitors.
