1 / 3East Heath Childrens Play Area
📍 London, Greater London
Hidden playground on Hampstead Heath featuring swings, slides, a climbing frame, balancing walkway, and a sandpit—uncommon in London. Spacious grassy surrounds suit picnics, and an ice cream van appears on sunny days.
Very nice playground. There is a sandpit, swings, slides and frames to climb. A lot of space if you want to have a picnic there. If you come from a Hampstead tube station, it would be a steep walk down. Usually I don't want to climb back up after, so I go down to Royal Free Hospital area and take a bus from there.
🏆 Family Action Verdict
Best for families with younger children who will spend extended time at the sandpit and varied equipment. The secluded, hedge-shielded setting keeps the atmosphere calm and away from road noise. Families arriving from Hampstead station should factor in the steep hill walk—plan the return route via the Royal Free Hospital area.

“Good playground. It is quite ample and hidden from the outside world. But what I consider as the most important part of it is the sandpit. It may seem strange but it is not so common to find one with in London. There are also three different types of swings, slides, and quite a lot of greenery here”

“The best local playground for younger children. There are a few swings, a sandpit, a climbing apparatus and a balancing walk way type of thingy. Lots of space for a picnic and a lurking ice-cream van outside on sunny days ! Shielded by hedges to give privacy from the road.”

Overview
Shielded by hedges from the road, this playground sits within Hampstead Heath and draws praise for its sandpit, which reviewers note is genuinely rare to find in London. Equipment includes three swing types, slides, climbing apparatus, and a balancing walkway. Plenty of tree-lined grass for picnics. Access from Hampstead tube involves a steep descent; the Royal Free Hospital bus stop is the easier return route.
