1 / 2Hackney Empire
📍 London, Greater London
A 1,200-seat Victorian theatre on Mare Street hosting comedy, music, opera and theatrical productions. Electric atmosphere and intimate sightlines.
Excellent venue. Hackney Central Station just around the corner on Mildmay Overground Line. Front of House & theatre staff very polite & helpful. Saw The Drifters and the performance, sound & lighting were terrific. Real Party atmosphere. Beautifully renovated decor and great view from our Dress Circle seats. I bought a round from Dress Circle Bar but the local pubs are nothing to recommend if you want pre show drinks. Baxters Court Wetherspoons (upstairs bar) was the best.
🏆 Family Action Verdict
Best for families with older children who can manage steep stairs and compact seating. The historic atmosphere is genuinely special — even large audiences feel intimate. Lower stalls or Dress Circle are the right call for families with anyone who has mobility notes or needs frequent toilet access during shows.

“I performed there on 1st February 2026, and the atmosphere was absolutely electric. The staff were welcoming, professional, and attentive, everything ran seamlessly. The venue felt beautifully intimate; you would never guess it seats over 1,200 people. Even those at the back had a clear view and heard every single moment. Thank you, Hackney Empire, and thank you to everyone who attended. From the entire Why Didn’t I Get Married? cast, we appreciate you all. ✨️🎭🖤💫”

“The theatre was great, unfortunately the issues I had were more about my ability to climb and descend stairs. We were in the Upper Circle, so there were a lot of stairs. The UC was steep giving us a great view but getting to the seats was difficult as there was nothing to hold on to to get down to our seats in Row C. The leg room is limited and if you need to get past people you're taking your life in your hands!”

“Stunning place with the nicest staff ever. Drinks at the bar are very refreshing and I got a perfect view of the scene from the upper circle. The upper circle may not be the best place to sit for people with back pain or similar problems, the seats are tiny! The seats are larger and fluffier at lower levels though.”

Overview
Built in 1906, Hackney Empire is a beautifully restored variety theatre presenting comedy, music, theatre and opera. The venue works with 4,000 young people annually through free community programmes. Dress Circle seating offers the best combination of views and accessibility. The Upper Circle delivers excellent sightlines at the cost of very steep descents. Small seats are the norm in upper levels; lower stalls offer more comfort.
