1 / 3The Castle Cinema
📍 London, Greater London
Two-screen independent cinema in Homerton with armchair seating, an all-day cafe/bar, parent & baby screenings, and a programme mixing indie films with blockbusters. Rating 4.8 from 838 reviews.
Amazing gem, really can't find enough fantastic words to say about the place, the people and my experience! The entrance is actually next to the building and up some stairs, the grocery store under was very helpful in directing me. Super welcoming bar/restaurant atmosphere, with smiling, friendly staff to take care of you. Plenty of food and drink options, including half and half salty/sweet popcorn. The music while waiting was a fabulous selection as well. The theater itself is small and comfortable, great sound and picture quality. But even better than all that was their advertising of local businesses and the fact that they provide a day for people with dementia to enjoy as well. Truly touched my heart.
🏆 Family Action Verdict
Best for families with children aged 6+ who enjoy boutique cinema over multiplex. The armchair seating and community atmosphere reward a special-occasion visit. Parent & baby screenings make it genuinely usable for under-ones. Families with noise-sensitive children should bring ear protection — the sound system runs at high volume.

“Super comfortable seats, lovely aesthetic in the auditorium. Sound quality is top-notch. Friendly staff and decent selection of food and drinks at the bar. Everything is also reasonably priced . I attended the pitch black album listening party experience which was surreal. Definitely the definitive way to experience an album. The crisp audio allows you to be immersed in the instrumentation and vocal Performance while you sit in awe blindfolded embracing the reverberation of the booming surround sound. Highly recommend .”

“LOVED my visit here. Beautiful building, great programme mixing indie flicks with blockbusters. They cafe/bar is so chill and social, it would be worth coming just to spend time there (and it seems many people do). The furnishings are so comfortable, screen 2 especially I thought. I found the staff really friendly and helpful too. I really wish this cinema was local to me. My only slight word of warning is that the salted popcorn is viciously salty - so a small portion does the trick!”

Overview
Castle Hackney is a crowd-funded independent cinema in a distinctive Hackney building. Both screens feature armchair seating with cushions available at the door. The cafe/bar serves locally sourced food all day and doubles as a social space worth visiting in its own right. Parent & baby screenings run regularly alongside special events including album listening nights. Sound levels run loud — bring earplugs if sensitive.
