Best for families with children aged 5 and over who enjoy exploratory nature walks and are comfortable on uneven ground. Waterproof boots are a practical necessity after rain. Pushchairs cannot access the island trails and will struggle at the kissing gate entrance.

“There is an entrance from where Strawberry Lane, River Gardens and Mill Lane meet. It's a metal kissing gate, and not for the portly! There's a circular path around the edges and two wooden bridges across to the island. Some paths have tree roots across them. Birds heard on my afternoon visit were magpie and chiffchaff, plus a robin. Mostly peaceful but train noise from nearby railway line.”

“A true hidden gem. Stepping onto Wilderness Island feels like entering another world — vibrant colours, birdsong even in winter and the sound of water from the river. Ponds, bridges, fallen trees, flowers and little dens create a quiet adventure. Looks small at the entrance , it feels larger inside with winding pathways inviting you to wander for a couple of hours.”

“Connecting with nature in Autumn at this island is such a treasure. A peaceful and quiet place to relax. Be prepared to wear boots in case of rain/mud. Unlike a park this place truly deserve its name being both an island (surrounded by water) and totally wild.”
